13강 1번 지문 직독과 어법설명 시작합니다!

 

13강 1번

1) The sociologist takes a scientific approach to social life.

그 사회학자는 어떤 과학적 접근을 취한다/ 사회적 생활에

사회학자는 사회생활에 대해 과학적인 접근법을 취한다.

approach : 명사, 명사일 때는 전치사 to와 세트로 씀, approach to A에 대한 접근법,

동사일 때는 목적어를 바로 붙이는 타동사 approach me (O, 나에게 접근하다) approach to me(X)

 

2) There are long-standing arguments within the field, however, about how the word 'scientific' should be interpreted.

오래-지속중인 논쟁들이 있다/ 그 분야 내에서,/ 하지만,/ 어떻게 그 단어 ‘과학적’이 해석되어야만 하는지에 대한

그러나 그 분야 내에서는 ‘과학적’이라는 말이 어떻게 해석되어야 하는지에 관한 오랜 논쟁이 있다.

 

3) Some argue that sociology should aspire to be as close to the natural sciences as possible.

몇몇은 주장한다/ 사회학은 열망해야만한다는 것을/ 똑같이 가까이있기를/ 그 자연 과학에/ 가능한한

어떤 사람들은 사회학이 자연과학에 가능한 한 근접하기를 열망해야 한다고 주장한다.

as close ~ as possible : [as 형부 as possible] (가능한한 똑같이 형부)

[as 형부 as] (만큼 똑같이 형부)는 앞의 as를 지우고 뒤의 as 포함하여 뒷쪽을 다 지운채 보면 핵심 구문이 잘 보입니다.  

> sociology should aspire/ to be close/ to the natural sciences. 

사회학은 열망해야만한다/ 가까이있는 것을/ 그 자연 과학에

여기에서 as(똑같이)를 close 앞에, as possible을 맨 뒤에 넣은 형태

 

4) For them, the best sociological research is highly quantitative.

그들에게 최고의 사회학적 연구는 매우 정량적이다.

 

5) Others, including myself, take a more relaxed view.

다른이들은,/ 나자신을 포함하여,/ 어떤 더 관대한 관점을 취한다.

나를 포함해 또 어떤 사람들은 더 관대한 관점을 취한다.

 

6) Quantitative research is indeed highly important and there are some areas, such as the study of social mobility for example, where it is indispensable.

정량적 연구는 정말로 매우 중요하다/ 그리고 몇몇 분야들이 있다,/ 예를 들어 사회 이동의 그 연구과 같은/ 예를 들어서,/ 그런데 거기에 그것은 없어서는안된다.

정량적 연구는 정말 매우 중요한데, 그것이 매우 필요한, 예컨대 사회 이동에 관한 연구 같은 몇몇 영역이 있다.

where : such as ~ for example을 제외시키면 앞에 선행사가 some areas이고 뒤에 완전한 문장, 그래서 where

[, where]은 "그런데 거기에서"로 해석

it : quantitative research를 지칭

 

7) Yet there are at least as many contexts where the intensive study of a few individuals can yield insights that no amount of number-crunching could reveal.

그러나/ 적어도 똑같이 많은 맥락들이 있다/ 그 집중적인 연구가/ 몇몇의 사람들의/ 통찰들을 산출할 수 있는/ 어떤 많은양의 숫자-연산도 드러낼수없었던

그러나 소수의 사람들에 대한 집중적인 연구가 아무리 많은 수치 연산도 드러낼 수 없는 이해를 가져올 수 있는 상황이 최소한 그만큼 많다.

as : [as 형부 as]의 앞의 as(똑같이), 뒤의 as(만큼)는 맥락상 쓰지않아도 알수있는 것이면 생략함,

여기서는 as quantitative research can이 생략된거라 볼 수 있음

where : 선행사 many contexts, 뒤에 완전한 문장, 해석은 ㄹ/ㄴ, 그래서 관계부사 where

that : 선행사 insights, 목적어자리가 비어있는 불완전문장, 해석은 ㄹ/ㄴ, 그래서 관계대명사 that

 

8) Very often the two approaches in fact need to be combined.

매우 흔하게/ 그 두 개의 접근법들은/ 사실/ 결합되는 것을 필요로한다.

사실 그 두 가지 접근법을 결합해야 하는 경우가 매우 흔하다.

 

9) For example, to properly understand social mobility we need to study the phenomenon statistically but also enquire into the personal experience and attitudes of the individuals involved.

예를 들어,/ 사회 이동을 적절하게 이해하기 위해서/ 우리는 그 현상을 통계적으로 연구하는 것을 필요로한다/ 그러나 또한 그 개인의 경험과 그 개인들의 태도들을 조사하는 것을 (필요로한다)/ 관련된

예를 들어, 사회 이동을 제대로 이해하기 위해서 우리는 그 현상을 통계상으로 연구할 필요가 있지만 또한 관련된 사람들의 개인 경험과 태도를 조사할 필요도 있다.

we need: we가 주어, need가 서술어

enquire : 앞의 study와 병렬

involved : 수동분사(p.p)로 앞의 the individuals를 수식
